Ancascocha Trek 4 Day to Machu Picchu: The Unknown Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Experience the raw, untouched beauty of the Andes on the Ancascocha Trek to Machu Picchu. Often overshadowed by more famous routes, this hidden gem was named one of the Top Six Alternate Routes to Machu Picchu” by National Geographic. If you are seeking solitude, high-altitude challenges, and authentic cultural immersion, this 4-day journey is designed for you.

At Tunqui Expeditions, we specialize in off-the-beaten-path adventures. Our expert guides lead you through remote landscapes where the modern world fades away, replaced by the timeless traditions of the Quechua people.

Why the Ancascocha Trek is the Ultimate Machu Picchu Alternative

The Ancascocha Trek is not just a hike; it is a world-class expedition recognized by National Geographic as one of the most beautiful walks on the planet. This 4 day Ancascocha trail offers a level of solitude and scenery that the classic routes simply cannot match.

  • The Path Less Traveled: This is the ultimate trek to Machu Picchu for hikers who want to avoid the crowds. You will experience the “Silent Trail,” where the only sounds are the Andean wind and the rhythmic steps of our traditional llama pack trains.
  • Breathtaking Topography: Over the course of your 4 day trek, you will climb to the majestic Rainbow Pass, gaze upon the massive La Veronica glacier, and descend through pristine cloud forests.
  • Cultural Immersion: Unlike other routes, the Ancascocha Trek takes you through authentic Quechua villages. Because our Tunqui Expeditions team grew up in these communities, you are welcomed as a friend rather than a tourist.
  • Physical Challenge and Reward: This challenging trek to Machu Picchu reaches elevations of 4,500 meters, rewarding your effort with views of turquoise alpine lagoons and archaeological sites that few travelers ever see.

Experience the Ancascocha Trek 4 days of pure Andean magic. With Tunqui Expeditions, you are guaranteed a professional, safe, and deeply spiritual journey to the heart of the Inca world.

Itinerary Ancascocha Trek 4 Day to Machu Picchu

Day 1: Urubamba – Yanacocha Lagoon – Puma Pata

The Beginning of an Exclusive Andean Odyssey

Our expedition commences at daybreak. We provide private transport from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley directly to the trailhead at the pristine Yanacocha Lagoon, situated at an impressive 4,572 m / 15,000 ft). Here, you will be introduced to our expert team of muleteers to begin a journey that redefines the Ancascocha Trek experience.

The adventure starts with a gradual 45-minute ascent, followed by a gentle descent through landscapes untouched by mass tourism. The rugged purity of these mountains—home only to wild alpacas, llamas, and the majestic Andean Condor—fosters an immediate and profound connection with nature.

We take pride in our “Farm-to-Table” philosophy. Your first gourmet lunch is prepared using organic ingredients sourced directly from our family farm, served at Amarupata (4,400 m) with the imposing Mount Moyuc as your backdrop.

The afternoon challenge involves a 30-minute steady climb to conquer our first high-altitude pass: Kinsa Cruz (4,700 m / 15,748 ft). From this vantage point, you will witness the breathtaking erosion of highland valleys, a view exclusive to this Tunqui Expeditions route. A final 1.5-hour trek brings us to our secluded campsite at Puma Pata for a chef-prepared dinner under the stars.

  • Hiking Time: 6 – 7 Hours
  • Distance: 11 km /  6.84 miles
  • Maximum Altitude: 4,700 m / 15,748 ft

Day 2: The Sacred Qhapaq Ñan – Puma Pata to Ancascocha Lake

Walking the Ancient Veins of the Inca Empire

You will awaken to an indescribable Andean sunrise, as the first light pierces the jagged peaks of the Vilcanota range. After a high-energy breakfast, we begin what is arguably the most scenic stretch of any alternative trek to Machu Picchu.

This section is a visual masterpiece, framed by distant views of the Rainbow Mountain and glistening snow-capped summits. We ascend toward the expedition’s highest point: a breathtaking summit at 4,925 m / 16,158 ft). From this vantage, the panoramic views of the Humantay Glacier and the deep Andean valleys offer a perspective rarely seen by standard trekking groups.

Following a gourmet lunch served in the fresh mountain air, we descend through landscapes that feel frozen in time. Unlike the crowded classic routes, we follow the authentic Qhapaq Ñan (the Great Inca Road)—a UNESCO World Heritage network of which the traditional “Inca Trail” is only a fraction.

The day concludes at the legendary Ancascocha Lagoon (4,354 m / 14,284 ft), the turquoise jewel that gives this trek its name. Our private campsite is strategically perched in a hidden valley, offering a commanding view of the lagoon and the surrounding glaciers, ensuring a night of absolute peace and Andean solitude.

  • Hiking Time: 7 – 8 Hours
  • Distance: 12 km / 7.46 miles
  • Maximum Altitude: 4,925 m / 16,158 ft
  • Highlights: Crossing the Continental Divide and walking the original Inca Road.

Day 3: Sacred Waters & The Cloud Forest – Ancascocha to Aguas Calientes A Spiritual Descent into the Sacred Valley

Your morning begins with a hot cup of Andean coffee or coca tea, served against the mirror-like backdrop of the deep-blue Ancascocha Lagoon. Today’s journey is not just physical, but spiritual. We descend to the water’s edge to participate in a traditional glacier water ceremony, a private ritual designed by Silvio Tunqui to honor the Apus (mountain spirits) and thank the Earth for our safe passage.

Following this moment of connection, we begin our descent through the Ancascocha Valley. This route offers a rare glimpse into the local way of life, as we encounter high-altitude herders tending to their alpacas. As the altitude drops, the landscape transforms into a spellbinding cloud forest. This lush ecosystem is a haven for exotic orchids and vibrant Andean flora, offering a striking contrast to the glacial peaks of the previous days.

The trail leads us alongside the rushing Ancascocha River until we reach the village of Camicancha. Here, we enjoy a final, celebratory alfresco lunch prepared by our trekking chef before bidding farewell to our dedicated horsemen.

  • Hiking Time: 5 – 6 Hours
  • Distance: 10 km / 6.21 miles
  • Elevation Change: From 4,325 m (14,189 ft) down to 2,100 m (6,889 ft)

  • Large plastic bags: Useful for separating clean and dirty clothes or keeping items dry.
  • Sleeping bag: We recommend one rated to -10°C (14°F) or lower.
  • Towel: We provide a small one, but you may want a slightly larger towel for extra comfort.

Pricing & Availability: Ancascocha Trek 4 Days

The Ancascocha Trek to Machu Picchu is an elite, off-the-beaten-path experience available from March to January.

During this time, the Tunqui Expeditions team—our guides, chefs, and muleteers—undergoes advanced training and annual planning to ensure the highest standards of service for the upcoming season.
