Munay Awaq Sak’as Handicrafts
This program, called Munay Awaq Sak’as, means “Beautiful Flower Weavers” in the native Quechua language. This project was carried out in the community of Poques-Lamay, Sacred Valley, 55 km from Cusco.
Most of the mothers in the community are dedicated to herding Andean camelids and farming, which helps cover family expenses, school costs, and even supports their children who are in university. However, these activities generate minimal financial income.
That is why the Tunqui Expeditions team launched this initiative with the phrase:
“The community has the raw materials; they only lack knowledge and dedication.”
At first, the community lacked funds to acquire a place to gather, work, and weaving tools. However, with the help of the community, Tunqui Expeditions, and trained artisans, the project was able to begin.
The women in the community started dedicating themselves to weaving daily until they had a variety of handmade textiles. Most of the women already knew how to weave and spin but lacked the skills to sell, promote, or travel to market their textiles.
Tunqui Expeditions took on the responsibility of promoting and bringing the women and their handmade textiles to tourist locations such as fairs, hotels, and restaurants, helping them sell their crafts.
Thanks to the community’s dedication, they now focus on the production of textiles such as:
Today, with Tunqui Expeditions’ transportation services, artisans from the Poques community travel to fairs organized by GERCETUR or Cusco tourism entities, working together with the local community.

We organize group departures every Monday to visit the community and learn about their culture, traditions, customs, and gastronomy in Poques.
