Our exciting adventure begins early in the morning. We’ll pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 am, and drive for two hours to Pitumarca, followed by another 1.5-hour ride to Huchuy Phinaya, the starting point of our trek.
While you prepare with your gear—comfortable clothing, hiking shoes, poles, and daypack—our talented mountain chef will serve a hearty and nutritious breakfast to energize you for the day’s challenge.
Before setting out, your guide will go over the full itinerary and safety instructions to help you feel confident and prepared for the 2-day Ausangate Trek.
We’ll begin this incredible hike through a lush green valley, offering stunning views of the Ausangate Glacier, the tallest peak in the Cusco region. Along the trail, you’ll pass through remote Andean communities, experiencing their deep connection to nature. Hundreds of alpacas and llamas will be your silent companions as you walk.
We’ll stop for a well-earned lunch in Surapata (4,050 m / 13,287 ft), surrounded by the serenity of the Andes and herds of free-roaming llamas, alpacas, and sheep.
After lunch, we continue with a 2-hour uphill hike to Jampa Pass (5,070 m / 16,634 ft), one of the trek’s highest points. The views of the sacred, snow-covered peaks from here are absolutely unforgettable.
From the pass, we descend for about 2 hours to our private campsite at Jampa (4,300 m / 14,107 ft).
Enjoy a delicious hot dinner and a peaceful night under the stars in your comfortable tent. Remember to stay warm—nights in the Andes can be very cold.
Highlight of the day: Explore the majestic 7 Lakes of Ausangate and offer gratitude to Mother Earth.
After a nourishing breakfast, we begin our downhill hike to the viewpoint of the 7 Ausangate Lakes and the awe-inspiring Ausangate Glacier. The towering snow-covered mountains are truly magical—have your camera ready!

You’ll meet your guide and group at our office the evening before your trek at 5:00 pm. During this session, you’ll receive your duffel bag, which will be carried by our muleteers or porters. An official bilingual (English-Spanish) guide, all graduates from the Tourism program at UNSAAC – National University of San Antonio Abad of Cusco. We choose our guides for their professionalism, experience, passion, and deep knowledge of the Andean culture. They are all locals who will make you feel safe, supported, and inspired throughout your trek.
Our guides are first aid certified and trained annually every February. Your guide will carry a complete first aid kit and oxygen for high-altitude emergencies. If necessary, we will arrange evacuation and transport to a clinic as quickly as possible.
All equipment is carried by our team of porters and pack animals.
We believe it’s the little details that set us apart:
We’re available by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for anything you need before or during your trek.
Each guide carries a fully charged satellite phone to stay connected even in remote areas. These can be used for emergencies or personal calls (fees apply). Radios often have limited range, so we include satellite phones for extra security.
From the first lunch to the last breakfast, we provide boiled, filtered, and cooled water. Bring a 2-liter bottle or CamelBak for refills at every meal.
Each morning starts with a cup of hot coca tea delivered to your tent.
Before dinner, enjoy popcorn, cookies, coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and more to unwind after your hike.
You’ll receive a reusable cloth snack bag filled with fruit, cookies, chocolate, and candy. It will be refilled every morning.
To reduce plastic waste, every hiker gets a reusable snack bag.
You’ll receive a small towel and soap before each meal for hand washing.
Mules carry all camping equipment and your 7 kg duffel bag. Muleteers are responsible for your gear each day.
All taxes and permit fees related to this trek are included in the price. No hidden costs.
While these inclusions may be less tangible, they are essential to the way we work:
Our porters are the backbone of every trek. Tunqui Expeditions was founded by Silvio Tunqui, a former porter himself, who understands their needs. We provide:
Every year, we organize 4 trips to Machu Picchu for our porters and their families—many of whom had never been there. They finally get to touch the stones and walk the paths of their ancestors.
Since 2022, we’ve included female guides, porters, and cooks. We celebrate diversity and aim to build a 50/50 team of men and women in the mountains.
We are proud to be a green operator. We leave no trace, clean up trash left by others, and use local biodegradable products whenever possible. We even include an extra porter to ensure the trails stay clean.
At Tunqui Expeditions, we’re committed to making your trip to Peru and your Ausangate Trek as memorable and worry-free as possible. In this section, you’ll find answers to the most common questions about traveling with us.
Still have questions? Don’t hesitate to contact us—we’ll be happy to assist you!
Proper acclimatization is essential before any high-altitude hike. We strongly recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 to 3 days before your trek begins. This helps you adjust to the altitude and avoid potential altitude sickness during the hike.
If you’ve already spent time in another high-altitude area in Peru, we still suggest spending at least one full day in Cusco to rest, recover from travel, and explore the city before your adventure begins.
Recommended activities before your trek:
Your pre-trek briefing will be held at our main office in Cusco (or at your hotel) at 5:00 p.m., the night before your trek. The session lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
If you are unable to attend at this time, please let us know by email, phone, or in person to arrange a different time.
If you have an outstanding balance, it must be paid at least 2 days before the trek begins. Otherwise, your reservation will not be confirmed.
You can pay in cash (USD or Peruvian soles) at our Cusco office. ATMs are available along Avenida El Sol and dispense both currencies.
You may also pay using credit/debit card or PayPal (in person or online), but note that a 5% service fee applies to electronic payments via Niubiz or PayPal.
Unfortunately, we do not accept personal checks or traveler’s checks.
You’ll receive a duffel bag at your pre-trek briefing. It will be carried by our muleteers and handed to you at each campsite.

You can safely store your main luggage at our office (arrange this during the briefing or via email), or at your hotel—free of charge in both cases.
Any gear not needed on the trek can be stored securely. Most hotels in Cusco offer luggage storage. Please do not leave valuables in your suitcase—store them in your hotel safe and request a detailed receipt (required by some insurance providers in case of theft).
We recommend placing valuables like credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for added peace of mind.
Tunqui Expeditions offers pick-up service from hotels within the Historic Center of Cusco.
Your guide will confirm the pick-up time during your briefing. Please note: due to traffic, pick-up times may vary by 30 to 45 minutes.
Cusco’s narrow cobbled streets and steep hills may make access difficult for vehicles. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located in pedestrian-only areas.
We highly recommend booking accommodation with easy access to ensure a smooth pick-up.
Group treks include participants of different ages and fitness levels. By joining a group, you accept that some travelers may be faster or slower than you.
Everyone is encouraged to walk at their own pace, and your guide will ensure that no one is left behind.
In the rare case that a group wants to modify the itinerary, the guide will make the final decision after consulting all participants.
Strikes and social protests are common in Peru and may affect transportation or trekking routes.
When possible, we’ll adjust your itinerary—even if it means leaving earlier than scheduled. In rare cases, tours may be canceled for your safety.
If changes occur, our operations team will inform you and ensure your safety is always the top priority.
Please pay attention to your belongings at all times and check the vehicle, tents, and restaurants before leaving.
You are fully responsible for your personal items during the trek.
