After enjoying breakfast at your hotel (or a boxed breakfast), your expert local guide from Tunqui Expeditions will greet you and accompany you in private transportation through the dramatic Andean highlands.
Before setting off on the trail, you’ll have the option to hike to the turquoise waters of Humantay Lake—a stunning 3-hour round-trip hike. Simply let your guide know if you’d like to include this side adventure.
From Soraypampa, your trek winds through a spectacular glacial valley flanked by towering peaks. The views are unforgettable—Salkantay (6,271 m / 20,574 ft.) and Humantay (5,862 m / 19,232 ft.) dominate the horizon with awe-inspiring majesty.
At Salkantaypampa (4,154 m / 13,628 ft.), pause for a delicious gourmet lunch prepared by your personal chef, featuring fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. After lunch, continue your journey deeper into the Andes until you arrive at our exclusive luxury campsite in Soyrococha (4,480 m / 14,698 ft.).
Once at camp, unwind with a hot shower and optional massage while taking in the peaceful mountain surroundings. End the day with a three-course organic dinner, then settle into your heated bedroom tent and fall asleep under a sky full of stars.
The Challenges and Rewards of the Andes: Conquer the Salkantay Pass
Fuel up with a hearty, nutritious breakfast before taking on one of the most thrilling and rewarding days of the trek. Today, you’ll ascend to the legendary Salkantay Pass (4,638 m / 15,213 ft)—the highest point on the trek. Surrounded by the colossal presence of Mount Salkantay (6,271 m / 20,574 ft.), this moment is pure magic. Upon reaching the summit, celebrate your achievement with a glass of champagne and breathtaking views of the Vilcabamba mountain range.
For experienced hikers, there’s an optional one-hour round-trip excursion to Salkantaycocha, a hidden gem known for its vibrant endemic vegetation and rare wildlife sightings. Just inform your guide in advance if you’d like to include this extra adventure.
From the pass, descend through dramatic Andean landscapes to Wayracmachay (3,906 m / 12,814 ft.), where a chef-prepared gourmet lunch awaits. During the 3.5-hour descent, keep an eye out for the rich diversity of birds and wildlife. You may spot the majestic Andean condor, as well as hummingbirds, tanagers, and other colorful species thriving in the shifting ecosystem.
In the afternoon, continue trekking through lush vegetation and explore the scenic villages of Andenes and Chaullay, renowned for their exotic orchids, bromeliads, and cloud forest charm.
Arrive by late afternoon at our luxurious Collpapampa campsite (2,870 m / 9,416 ft), tucked into the heart of the mystical Peruvian cloud forest. Here, unwind with a hot shower, soothing massage, and a delectable gourmet dinner served in comfort and style.
Exploring the Heart of the Peruvian Cloud Forest
Begin your day with a revitalizing breakfast, then set off on a serene descent through the lush and mystical Peruvian cloud forest. This part of the trek is a nature lover’s paradise—bromeliads, wild orchids, and ferns blanket the trail in vibrant colors and textures, while birdsong fills the air.
Your expert local guide will help you spot an array of native birds, including hummingbirds, colorful tanagers, and, if you’re lucky, the elusive Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird. As you continue through this rich ecosystem, you’ll pass through the remote valleys of Wiñaypoco (2,650 m / 8,694 ft.) and Lluscamayo (2,420 m / 7,939 ft.), encountering coffee, cacao, and fruit plantations along the way.
This day offers a special cultural connection—interact with local farming families, learn about their traditional lifestyles, and gain a deeper appreciation for the Andean way of life.
Arrive at Playa Sahuayaco (2,100 m / 6,889 ft.) in time for a chef-prepared gourmet lunch at your scenic luxury campsite. In the afternoon, enjoy a private tour of nearby coffee plantations, where you’ll experience the full journey of coffee—from bean to cup. Savor a freshly brewed tasting and enjoy the rich aromas of high-altitude Peruvian coffee.
Back at camp, indulge in a hot shower, optional massage, and a delicious dinner served under the stars. The night closes with a magical stargazing experience—the remote location provides a perfect vantage point for witnessing the Milky Way, constellations, and planets in stunning clarity.
The Final Ascent of the Salkantay Trek
Your final day of trekking begins with an early gourmet breakfast at 5:00 AM, fueling your spirit for the most anticipated stretch of the journey. A private transfer takes you to Lucmabamba (2,062 m / 6,765 ft.), the gateway to a little-known but spectacular section of the original Inca Trail.
Trek uphill for approximately 3.5 hours through a rich subtropical landscape, where the jungle brushes shoulders with history. At the summit, you’ll reach the Llactapata ruins (2,736 m / 8,976 ft.), a hidden gem rarely seen by travelers. Here, for the first time, catch a breathtaking glimpse of Machu Picchu in the distance, dramatically framed by the surrounding mountains.
Enjoy a scenic gourmet lunch at the Llactapata Lodge Viewpoint (2,570 m / 8,432 ft.), where you can relax with panoramic views of the Veronica and Vilcanota mountain ranges—a perfect reward after the climb.
After lunch, descend for 2 hours to the Hydroelectric Station (1,771 m / 5,810 ft.), where you’ll board a comfortable 45-minute train ride through the lush jungle to the village of Aguas Calientes (2,070 m / 6,820 ft.)—your launch point for Machu Picchu.
Upon arrival, your guide will accompany you to your luxury hotel, where you can refresh, unwind, and take full advantage of the amenities. Over a delicious dinner, you’ll review the exciting plan for tomorrow’s grand finale—your visit to the Lost City of the Incas.

It’s very important to be properly acclimatized to the altitude before attempting any strenuous trekking. We highly recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 to 3 days before your Inca Trail tour to give your body time to adjust and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
If you’ve already spent time at high altitude in another region of Peru, we still suggest taking at least one full day in Cusco to rest, recover from travel, and enjoy the city before your hike.
Here are a few recommended activities near Cusco to enjoy before your adventure:
All tour briefings are held at our main office in Cusco (or at your hotel upon request) at 5:00 p.m. the day before your trek begins. The briefing lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
If you are unable to attend at that time, please contact us by email, phone, or in person to reschedule your briefing.
If you have a remaining balance for your trek, it must be paid at least 2 days before your departure date, otherwise your reservation cannot be confirmed.
We appreciate payments made in cash (either in US dollars or Peruvian soles) at our office in Cusco. You can withdraw money from various ATMs along Avenida El Sol.
We also accept credit/debit cards or PayPal (online or in person), but please note that both Niubiz and PayPal charge a 5% service fee.
We do not accept personal checks or traveler’s checks.
You’ll receive a duffel bag during your pre-trek briefing. Our porters will carry this for you and deliver it to each campsite.
The bag measures 60 x 24 x 22 cm (23.6 x 9.45 x 8.66 inches) and has a weight limit of 7 kg / 15.4 lb, including your sleeping bag, inflatable mattress, clothes, and personal items.
Absolutely! You may leave your extra luggage at our office in Cusco or at your hotel — both options are free of charge.
