Call us passionate—some might even say a little crazy—but we have always believed that travel should be more than just a break from routine.
Tunqui Expeditions is a 100% local Cusco-based trekking company, beginning operations in 2026, founded and led by Silvio Tunqui, a native of the Andean community of Poques, Cusco. Silvio’s journey started on the trails as a porter, and through dedication became a certified mountain guide with over 5 years of experience trekking to Machu Picchu.
We understand that many travelers look for companies with decades of history—and many claim it on their websites. We choose honesty. We are a new, specialized trekking agency, focused exclusively on treks to Machu Picchu. What we bring is not just freshness, but official certifications, government-authorized licenses, and a highly trained professional team.
As a responsible and sustainable local company, we are committed to:
Traveling with Tunqui Expeditions means choosing a journey that is authentic, human, and purpose-driven—guided by someone who truly comes from the land you are exploring.

Tunqui Expeditions is proudly led by Silvio Tunqui, a true local expert who knows the Inca Trail like the back of his hand. With years of hands-on experience, Silvio personally oversees every aspect of each journey— guiding the trekking team, coordinating the office staff, and ensuring the well-being and fair treatment of our porters.
The Inca Trail is one of the world’s most iconic trekking experiences. Successfully operating it requires precise logistics, expert coordination, deep cultural knowledge, and genuine passion. At Tunqui Expeditions, these are not just promises—they are the foundation of every trek we run. Traveling with a local operator means traveling with insight, responsibility, and authenticity that only true insiders can provide.
What could be better than the adventure of a lifetime? Changing the world while you experience it.
At Tunqui Expeditions, we call this Community-Based Tourism—and we are proud pioneers in creating meaningful connections between our treks and tours and the local communities we visit. While some companies build private domes, isolated cabins, or partner with shops selling mass-produced “replica” handicrafts, we choose a different approach.
With us, your journey directly supports the people you meet, the places you visit, and—through our ongoing community programs—the planet itself. Every hotel you stay in, every restaurant you dine at, and every tree you help us plant contributes to a positive impact that reaches each community involved.
Our journeys don’t just transform you—they help transform the world. All you have to do is enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Each of our routes to Machu Picchu is carefully designed to be truly exceptional. At Tunqui Expeditions, we operate 100% tent-based expeditions, using high-quality equipment from trusted brands such as Eureka and Mountain Hardwear, always with deep respect for our planet.
We intentionally say no to permanent domes or cabins. While many companies require trekkers to follow fixed itineraries dictated by the location of their private lodges, our approach is different. Our campsites are strategically prepared along your route—not the other way around.
This allows you to hike at a natural, comfortable pace and arrive each evening knowing that your camp is ready and waiting for you. The result is a more flexible, peaceful, and authentic trekking experience—just as these sacred routes were meant to be experienced.
The greatest reason travelers return to Tunqui Expeditions again and again is our extraordinary Indigenous Guides—true masters of the sacred Andes.
They know these mountains like the back of their hand, not only as paths to follow, but as living landscapes filled with stories, wisdom, and spirit. At times they are reflective and deeply spiritual; at others, romantic storytellers, musicians, and warm-hearted companions whose humor and energy turn strangers into family.
Their presence transforms each journey into something far greater than a trek. In the silence of the high mountains, they invite reflection, connection, and a deeper understanding of the land and of yourself.
Guiding with elegance, precision, and ancestral knowledge, they offer an experience that is adventurous, meaningful, and profoundly unforgettable.

We intentionally keep our groups small so you can truly connect with the places you explore and the people you travel with. Our groups bring together travelers from around the world, creating a rich, shared experience shaped by those who walk beside you.
For this reason, all of our treks are operated in small groups of up to eight guests, accompanied by two highly experienced guides. This ensures personalized attention, a close-knit group atmosphere, and the flexibility to hike at a comfortable pace—while minimizing our impact on the fragile Andean ecosystem.
Our small-group approach allows our guides to genuinely connect with each traveler, share deeper insights into Inca culture, and provide the level of care, safety, and attention you truly deserve.
Your journey deserves food that rises to the level of the experience. While it is possible to prepare meals for larger groups, the true quality of trail dining is achieved in small-group settings.
At Tunqui Expeditions, our professional mountain chefs create exceptional, organic meals using fresh, locally sourced ingredients—prepared exclusively for groups of up to eight travelers. Cooking for smaller groups allows for greater care, creativity, and attention to detail, resulting in meals that are simply superior in flavor, nutrition, and presentation.
Each dish is thoughtfully designed to be nourishing, energizing, and delicious, providing the strength you need on the trail while supporting sustainable agriculture and local farmers.
From warm quinoa breakfasts to freshly prepared Andean specialties, dining on the trail with Tunqui Expeditions is an experience in itself—authentic, healthy, and truly unforgettable.

Exceptional journeys require exceptional equipment. At Tunqui Expeditions, we provide top-quality gear to ensure maximum comfort, safety, and peace of mind throughout your trek—so you can focus entirely on the experience.
You’ll enjoy a simple and transparent booking system, along with spacious Eureka tents designed for four people but shared by only two, offering extra room and comfort. For restful nights, we provide premium Therm-a-Rest air mattresses, ensuring proper recovery after each day on the trail.
Your safety is our highest priority. Every expedition is equipped with private portable toilets, satellite phones, pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors, comprehensive first-aid kits, and oxygen tanks, allowing us to respond effectively to any situation in remote environments.
We also include Black Diamond trekking poles and complimentary gear such as duffel bags, backpack covers, rain ponchos, and personal luggage storage, so you can travel light and prepared for all conditions.
With Tunqui Expeditions, every detail is carefully selected to deliver a trekking experience that is comfortable, secure, and truly world-class.
What truly sets Tunqui Expeditions apart is our passionate and highly professional team. From expert Indigenous guides and skilled mountain chefs to dedicated porters, hard-working office staff, and courteous drivers, every member of our team is committed to delivering exceptional service. We operate with respect, fairness, gender equality, and ethical working conditions—ensuring that everyone behind your journey is valued, well-trained, and well-compensated.
When you travel with Tunqui Expeditions, you support people, protect the planet, and experience the Andes with integrity, care, and purpose.

More than a journey, it’s a commitment. At Tunqui Expeditions, Travel With Purpose means creating experiences that uplift local communities, respect Pachamama (Mother Earth), and honor the people who make each journey possible. Every trek is designed to leave a positive impact—on the land, the culture, and everyone involved.

Sustainable Travel: Trees for Days
When you book with us, you don’t just travel — you give back.
Every journey helps support our annual reforestation program during the rainy season, where we plant native Queuña and Qolley trees in high-Andean communities, protecting water sources and preserving the Andes for future generations.
Responsible Travel: Changing Lives
Change the world simply by having the time of your life.
We have always believed in the power of travel to change lives. But for that power to truly exist, we must travel the right way.
Women Empowerment
At Tunqui Expeditions, empowerment is part of our foundation.
While the company is led by Silvio Tunqui, our vision has always been to promote gender equality and create real opportunities for women in the tourism industry. We are proud to be among the first companies to employ Peruvian women as porters, opening doors in a field where opportunities for women were once extremely limited.
