Is the Salkantay Trek Private suitable for me?
The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is an excellent alternative to the Inca Trail and is ideal for adventurous hikers looking for a private trek to Machu Picchu with fewer crowds. The ascent to the iconic Salkantay Pass (4,630 m / 15,190 ft) occurs early in the trek. While not extremely steep, it does require good physical condition and proper acclimatization in Cusco before beginning your custom trekking tour Machu Picchu.
How many days should I spend acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the Salkantay Trek Private?
Being well-acclimatized is essential before starting a multi-day exclusive Salkantay trek. We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 to 3 days before your Salkantay Trek Private to adjust to the altitude. Even if you’ve already been in another high-altitude region of Peru, spending at least one full day in Cusco before your luxury trekking in Peru experience will help you feel stronger on the trail.
Suggested acclimatization activities around Cusco include short hikes and cultural tours before beginning your custom trekking tour Machu Picchu:
Pre-Trek Briefing Session
All pre-departure briefings for the Salkantay Trek Private 5 Days are held at our main office in Cusco (or at your hotel) at 5:00 PM the evening before your trek. The session lasts 30–45 minutes. If you cannot attend, please coordinate with us to arrange another time. This meeting is essential to meet your Salkantay trek private guide and receive your duffel bag.
Paying the Trek Balance in Cusco
Your exclusive Salkantay trek booking must be fully paid 2 days before departure. Balances can be paid in cash (USD or soles) at our office in Cusco. ATMs on Avenida El Sol provide both currencies.
You may also pay by card or PayPal (5% fee applies). Personal and traveler’s checks are not accepted. Timely payment ensures your custom trekking tour Machu Picchu is confirmed.
Duffel Bag for the Salkantay Trek Private
You will receive your duffel bag at the briefing. Our team will carry it during the trek and deliver it each evening at camp.
- Size: 60 x 24 x 22 cm (23.6 x 9.45 x 8.66 in)
- Weight limit: 7 kg / 15.4 lb, including sleeping bag, mat, and personal gear.
This allows you to enjoy the luxury trekking in Peru experience without carrying excess weight.
Can I store my luggage during the trek?
Yes! Your main luggage can be safely stored at our office or at your hotel free of charge while you enjoy your private trek to Machu Picchu. Please avoid leaving valuables in your suitcase. For added security, use a hotel safe or a sealed envelope for credit cards and important items.
Hotel Pick-Up Service
We offer pick-up service from hotels located in Cusco’s Historic Center. Your Salkantay trek private guide will confirm the exact time during the briefing.
Since Cusco’s streets are narrow and sometimes inaccessible to vehicles, we recommend choosing accommodation with easy access to facilitate transport before beginning your exclusive Salkantay trek.
Group Treks vs. Private Treks
Our Salkantay Trek Private is available both as a private departure and as part of a group. In group treks, participants hike at their own pace. If the group requests changes, your Salkantay trek private guide will coordinate with all members. Choosing a custom trekking tour Machu Picchu means enjoying a fully personalized pace and itinerary.
Returning from Machu Picchu to Cusco
After your guided visit to Machu Picchu, logistics are fully arranged:
- Shuttle bus to Aguas Calientes (25 minutes).
- Train ride to Ollantaytambo (1h 45m).
- Private transfer back to Cusco (1.5h).
All tickets are provided in advance by your Salkantay trek private guide. This ensures a smooth return from your private trek to Machu Picchu.
Strikes and Protests
Strikes are common in Peru and may occasionally disrupt tours. If necessary, we will adapt your exclusive Salkantay trek itinerary by leaving earlier or adjusting routes. Your safety always comes first.
Lost Items
Please take care of your belongings during your Salkantay Trek Private. You are responsible for personal items in camps, restaurants, and vehicles. Tunqui Expeditions cannot be held responsible for lost belongings during your luxury trekking in Peru experience.
