Huchuy Qosqo Day Trek: A Short Trek to the “Little Cusco” Lost in Time

The Huchuy Qosqo trek is a short yet unforgettable trek through the breathtaking highlands of Cusco. Along the way, travelers cross Andean valleys, crystal-clear streams, and ancient trails that lead to one of the region’s most enigmatic archaeological sites — Huchuy Qosqo, the “Little Cusco,” a hidden gem suspended in time.

Perched at over 3,550 meters above sea level, Huchuy Qosqo sits atop a small plateau with sweeping panoramic views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. From this privileged vantage point, it’s possible to admire the snow-capped peaks of Pitusiray and other majestic Andean mountains, as well as the picturesque town of Calca nestled far below.

According to historical chronicles, Inca Wiracocha ordered the construction of Huchuy Qosqo. In his later years, weary of the bustle of the imperial capital of Cusco, he sought refuge in this serene location to find peace and tranquility. The site was built on lands once occupied by pre-Inca settlements that were eventually integrated into the vast Tahuantinsuyo Empire. Because its urban layout mirrors that of Cusco itself, early 20th-century explorers fittingly named it Huchuy Qosqo — “Little Cusco” in Quechua.

Architecturally, Huchuy Qosqo showcases the Incas’ exceptional mastery of construction techniques. Its structures combine finely carved stone foundations with adobe walls — a remarkable fusion that has resisted centuries of harsh weather, earthquakes, and the relentless passage of time. These enduring walls stand as silent witnesses to the ingenuity and resilience of the Inca civilization.

Today, visiting Huchuy Qosqo is more than just a hike — it’s a journey through history, nature, and the enduring spirit of the Andes.
